Pizzoli SpA, Italy: From strategic choice to operational automation in frozen foods

Pizzoli, an Italian family company specializing in the cultivation, processing and marketing of fresh and frozen potatoes, is today a reality led by the third generation. This constantly growing company bases its production and roots in the province of Bologna, specifically in Budrio and San Pietro in Casale, which today are home to the logistics hub and the newly inaugurated production plant, opened in 2023.

Sustainability at the heart

The choice of the site for developing the logistics center confirms the dedication that Pizzoli has always had for the territory where the company was born and grew: instead of starting from a “green meadow” and building in a rural area, the Emilian company decided to recover an abandoned industrial area, specifically the 180,000 square meters of a former sugar factory in San Pietro in Casale (BO).

A choice of social and environmental responsibility that aligns with the attention Pizzoli has always paid to sustainability. In 2010, it also invested in the construction of a biomass plant for the production of renewable energy from biogas, entirely fueled by potato processing waste. The warehouse represented the first significant investment within a profound review process; a project that looked to the future, with a strong focus on innovation and eco-sustainability.

The benefits of automation in the deep freeze environment at Pizzoli

  • A flexible and scalable solution: This solution supports continuous growth. The warehouse is designed to easily adapt to the evolving needs of the company.
  • High density: Thanks to its high density, our solution allows a significant increase in storage capacity. This optimization of available space enables the management of a greater volume of products.
  • Human centricity: Processes are optimized to ensure higher throughput, improved ergonomics, and increased labor productivity. This human-centered approach ensures that operations are not only efficient but also safe and comfortable for workers.
  • Picking optimization: The implementation of an automated layered picking station has led to an increase in quality and throughput. This advanced system reduces errors and speeds up picking operations, improving overall efficiency.

We’re excited to introduce Alberto Manaresi, Technical Director at Pizzoli, Italy's leading producer of fresh and frozen potatoes for over three generations.

With its roots in Budrio, Bologna — a region famous for growing high-quality potatoes — Pizzoli has always combined tradition with technical innovation. A major milestone in this journey was the implementation of a deep-freeze automated warehouse in 2016, a technological breakthrough that revolutionized their logistics operations.
