ASKO - Norway's largest grocery supplier automates with Swisslog
11 December 2024
ASKO has decided to build a new automated warehouse for high-frequency goods in collaboration with Swisslog. The two companies have been working closely together for 20 years on the automation of ASKO's central warehouse in Vestby, Norway, where the new facility will be established.
"Our old facility, specially designed for handling tobacco products, has reached the end of its useful life, which led to the decision to build a completely new facility where we can handle many different types of high-frequency products. In this way, we get a future-proof, generic facility for handling both snuff and tobacco, but also over-the-counter pharmacy products and other frequently sold goods," says Jakob Spone, Technical Manager at ASKO.
In its procurement process, ASKO invited a relatively large number of automation companies, where the choice finally fell on Swisslog.
"I am very happy that we chose Swisslog for the new plant. They have designed a smart, efficient solution with a good working environment. In addition, Swisslog has long been well established here at the central warehouse in Vestby, where they also have an on-site service organization, which is important,” says Spone.
The automation solution includes four energy-efficient Tornado miniload cranes, a picking facade and twenty picking stations equipped with cameras and scanners. Also included are pallet conveyor systems, automatic palletizing stations and SynQ WMS software. Jakob Spone is excited about what the new automated facility will deliver.
"Control systems (WCS) are becoming increasingly important for a well-functioning warehouse automation and we are very much looking forward to starting to use SynQ WMS in the new facility. The goal is that the new facility will provide us with 100% picking quality and a solution that gives us a good capacity to handle demand variations and continued growth.
"It is of course great that ASKO chooses us as a partner in tough competition and where our solution's efficiency and good working environment were crucial components," says Jens Erik Jøranli, Sales Manager Integrated Solutions at Swisslog.
The construction of the new warehouse started already in June this year and Swisslog will start implementing the automation solutions in July 2025.
